I have darker skin – can I still get this treatments done?

Treatments are great and we have something for everyone!

Venus Versa™ treatments that use IPL lasers that work best for light to medium skin tones. The treatment may work on darker skin, but there is a higher risk of discoloration because darker skin has more pigment in it. It’s best to consult with the technician to see if you’d be a good fit.

Skin tone is determined using the Fitzpatrick skin type scale, which ranges from skin type I (very fair) to type VI (very dark). There are three main factors that influence a patient’s skin type: genetic disposition, reaction to sun exposure, and how the skin tans. It’s important to always correctly determine your patient’s skin type before beginning a treatment to ensure safety and efficacy. Use the chart below as a reference to help determine which skin type your patients fall under.

How Does One Determine the Skin Type?

Why do I need a consultation?

A consultation helps you to learn & identify which program or treatment would be best for you.

What if I don't know what's best for me?

Book a consultation. The goal of the consultation is to create an effective treatment plan. Through the process of an in-person assessment, we are able to discuss your goals and expectations, health and safety, budget, and design a treatment plan that will work best for you.

Creating a customized approach during consults?

One of the biggest advantages of a pre-treatment consultation is that this allows you to meet the professionals who will be implementing your treatment. And this can help to alleviate any worries or concerns you might have, and as a result, you will be better prepared, and feel calmer when you come in for the procedure.

What should I expect during a consultation?

The consultation is the best chance for you to get to know the provider! We know that discussing concerns and choosing a treatment plan is deeply personal and unique. Meeting your provider will allow you time to ask questions in our intimate boutique spa environment that is relaxed and personal. Our clinician will review and ask questions about your goals, lifestyle, history, and assess your concerns in-person. Then we’ll discuss treatments and products (or a combination of a few) that would be the best fit. We never force “sales” tactics to get you to spend more or overdo it. Our goal is to deliver optimal results, period, and we always try to work with your budget.

How much do Consultations cost?

Consultations are complimentary. A returning patient wanting a "new" service or additional service will also receive an additional complimentary consultation.

How long do consults and treatments take? Can I do it during my lunch break?

Absolutely. Exact treatment times may vary depending on the patient, but a single like laser hair removal session typically takes 10-20 minutes. While others may take 30-60 minutes depending on the treatment area.

How many sessions will I need to see results?

Most patients receive 3-8 treatments. Sessions and programs are unique for every person.

How often/far apart should the treatments be?

Skin tightening/Contouring and Acne treatments are done once a week for several weeks. While treatments like laser hair removal, IPL Photofacial, Skin Resurfacing, and micro-needling should be scheduled 30 days apart.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for the treatment?

Make sure your skin is clean. Do not apply any lotions, creams or makeup before your session, and stop using any products that might irritate your skin 2-3 days before. You should also avoid tanning. You may be advised to shave the area before your treatment. Remove all jewelry around the area being treated.

What does the treatment feel like?

Face & body contouring feel like a hot stone massage. IPL and Laser treatments feel like a light snap with an elastic band against your skin, or like if someone lightly flicked you.

Will it be painful?

Our applicators have a cooling feature built into it to make the treatment as comfortable as possible, but you might feel a bit of discomfort if you’re treating a more sensitive area, like the upper lip. If you find it too uncomfortable, let the operator know and they can adjust the treatment accordingly.

How will I feel after my treatment?

Your skin may feel warm, like a sunburn, with some redness, but other than that, you really shouldn’t feel any different if you follow instructions for before and after your treatment.

How long will the results last and are they permanent?

It really depends on where you start & how well you take care of your skin & body after your treatments. We recommend maintenance sessions annually. Maintenance treatments depend on how your skin responds to the treatment, overall healing & aftercare.

Is there any downtime?

There is no downtime. You can return to your daily schedule immediately after your treatment.

Do I need to do anything after my treatment?

Lasers-Avoid tanning for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your treatment, and wear sunscreen (at least SPF 30). You should also avoid hot baths, massages, or any treatment that requires direct contact with the skin for the first 2 days after your treatment. If you notice anyblisters or scabbing, treat it with a prescribed antibiotic cream—always consult with your treatment provider first. You can go back to gentle washing and using gentle, non-irritating products immediately afterward.
